CMEA Ventures is a San Francisco-based venture capital firm that was established in 1989 and specializes in high technology, life sciences, and alternative energy investments. Rodney D. Altman, MD joined CMEA in 2006. Prior to joining CMEA, he was a founder and managing director of Aphelion Capital. Previously, he also worked at Piper Jaffray Ventures and was a partner at TVM Techno Venture Management. Before joining TVM, Rod practiced emergency medicine for 10 years. He was the Assistant Medical Director of the emergency department at MacNeal Hospital in suburban Chicago and a Clinical Instructor at the University of Chicago. On a limited basis, Rod continues to practice emergency medicine at Stanford University Medical Center where he is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine in the Department of Surgery. He graduated from McGill University's Faculty of Medicine as a University Scholar and from the University of Chicago's business school with honors. Rod is a Fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians. At CMEA, he focuses on investments in medical devices, biotechnology therapeutics, and diagnostics. Rod serves as a director on the boards of SurgiQuest, Inc., InSound Medical, and Visiogen.

Kurt Azarbarzin founded SurgiQuest, Inc. in spring of 2005 and started operations in April of 2006. He is a senior medical device executive with an accomplished research and development career in the surgical, cardiovascular, interventional, orthopedic and urological markets. Kurt has a proven track record of leading development of over 80 new products, resulting in annual sales of over $910 million. He has demonstrated his marketing acumen, manufacturing expertise, regulatory and clinical knowledge, and an ability to communicate effectively with medical professionals, the financial community and consultants. Mr. Azarbarzin has diversified experience in all facets of product design/enhancement, encompassing process/manufacturing engineering, team building, finance, vendor relations, regulatory requirements and quality assurance. He has successfully built and directed highly technical development teams, including professionals from technicians to PhDs, and managed a myriad of research resources from metallurgy to model shops. Kurt has over 22 years of experience in Marketing, Research & Development and Quality Assurance from U.S. Surgical/Tyco Healthcare, Spine Wave and Respimetrix.

Joe DeVivo was appointed President of Smith & Nephew's Orthopaedic Reconstruction Division on June 18, 2007. He brings them 18 years of marketing, development, sales, operations and executive leadership experience. Most recently Joe served as President and Chief Executive Officer of RITA Medical Systems, Inc., a pioneer of radiofrequency ablation technology, which was acquired by AngioDynamics in 2006. Previously, he served as President and Chief Operating Officer of medical robotics company Computer Motion, Inc., helping to turn the company's performance around ahead of its merger with Intuitive Surgery, Inc in 2003. From 1993 to 2002, DeVivo was at United States Surgical (USS), a division of Tyco Healthcare, where he held a wide variety of roles, including Vice President and General Manager of the USS/DG Sutures division, VP of Global Marketing, VP of Global R&D and Director of Product Development. He has a B.S. in Marketing and Management from the University of Richmond.

Ned Scheetz is the founder of Aphelion Capital, a healthcare investment firm engaged in public and private equity investing. Prior to forming Aphelion, Ned was a Managing Director with Piper Jaffray Ventures (“PJV”) for seven years. Ned joined PJV from Janus Capital where he was a Senior Research Analyst covering healthcare. Ned is currently a Director of Thermics Inc., SurgiQuest, Inc., and Vaso Nova and Chairman of Vitruvian Orthopaedics, and has served on the boards of 14 healthcare companies in his career. He holds the CFA designation and is an Advisory Board Member with the Center for Medical Device Innovation and on the Business Advisory Board of The Epilepsy Therapy Development Project. Bruce Shook is the President and CEO of Neuronetics in Malvern, PA. Neuronetics is a clinical stage medical device company developing novel therapeutic products for psychiatric and neurologic diseases. Neuronetics was created around non-invasive brain stimulation technology licensed from The Innovation Factory and Emory University. Previously, Bruce was President and CEO of Neuron Therapeutics, a venture-backed company developing drug/device combination products for the treatment of traumatic CNS disorders. He co-founded Neuron Therapeutics with scientific staff from Thomas Jefferson University. Prior to Neuron Therapeutics, Mr. Shook was President of Abiomed, a publicly traded manufacturer of advanced cardiac assist technology, where he brought the first external ventricular assist device to the U.S. market and was responsible for sales, marketing, engineering, manufacturing, regulatory affairs and quality assurance. He has also held positions in engineering, sales support and regulatory affairs with Cordis Corporation. Bruce has more than 20 years of experience in the medical device industry including venture finance of early stage companies. He holds advanced degrees in biomedical engineering and business administration from Columbia University and the MIT Sloan School of Management, respectively. He is a Director for Neuronetics, Cardiac Concepts (a venture-backed medtech company) and the Penn State Research Foundation.
